Okay, so I got my daily dose of Jenny on the Spot this afternoon while I ate (yes... I read while I eat) and if you haven't read her, you MUST!
This is the blog post from today - Socio and Enviro-minded Gift-giving. Which led me to this one about Leg Warmers! How freaking cute are they? I'm so trying them. As a girl who has an extreme amount of "I is COLD" moments, I can fully appreciate the snuggly goodness of leg-warmers inside meh boots.

Off to work on my book. I'm still on for the first of the year, with publishing (on Kindle, then Smashwords and perhaps Lulu) AWAKENED: THE BEGINNING. I'm halfway done and giving myself headaches trying to finish it BEFORE Christmas. I hope I can. Then I'm taking a few days break to enjoy the holidays and publishing it, then making the page so people can access behind the scenes goodies from purchasing the book. Oh! And getting the cover done for it too.
Can't forget the best part!
And one last thing too!
This site will be getting a brand-spanking-new look come the new year! And lots of other goodies! :D

tell me about publishing... i have those ideas swirling constantly around in my thoughts.. but am trying to figure out how to get out... something.. i really just need to narrow it down to something specific... like a children's book (yes!) or young adult (yes!)..... those are what interest me....

Those would be two GREAT choices. I have been considering a children's book. Already have a cookbook idea--based off the site I have up oldworldcharm-modernliving.blogspot.com (it will be the name)--and there's pretty much no stopping you when you go the self-publishing route. I think it's, in a way, a little better because you don't have to find different agents and publishers depending on what book you want.
ReplyDeleteWith self-publishing, pretty much all you have to do is write the book (easy, but not the easiest lol), edit like crazy (gotta be REALLY good at that part, or have someone help you, or someone paid to--I've got a friend who took writing courses and helps grab ALL mistakes, not just the writing, but grammar, and spelling too), and then publish it on a chosen area. For me, I've narrowed it to Amazon, B&N, Smashwords (which takes care of the B&N for me, and is REALLY popular right now), and Lulu (perhaps). I get the most royalties from all of them.
Then you've got your marketing. Now I've spent 5 years selling Avon and a lifetime of marketing myself from wanting to BE my own independent boss and having done a lot of stuff like that, which gave me that experience (though I'm still learning loads every day). But to get the best for your book, you've gotta be able to market it, which is generally why most book people don't do self-publishing, but in reality ALL book writers can benefit from marketing themselves. Marketing involves just making a site for the books, telling people about them (FB and all social sites make it MUCH easier) and advertise it like crazy so that it gets exposure since you will be your own agent.
Sounds a little hard when written down, but basically you're uploading a book you've written to a site [of your choosing] and then telling people about it and having them buy it. Breaking it down you realize it's not that hard, but if you're not wanting to make a career of it (like I am) then you really don't NEED to do tons of hours of marketing and promotion like I plan to. You just need to write it and get it on Amazon, then by word of mouth people will slowly get the word out. When I do it, I will want to really work my butt off because I want this as a career because I LOVE to write and have people read my stuff! I want to give the same experience to others that I get when I read a really great book... only getting paid as well would be perfect. But, as a writer, I know I won't make millions off that first book, which is fine, but it's also why I'm working so hard at ALL my books. So it's not AS hard as it may seem. You just first have to write the book. :)

Oh, although I must add in that when you self-publish an e-book, the formatting is what's different than print books. When you e-pub, then the formatting becomes more for readability, then the print would be. So your font choices, and how you format after (or as) you write the book, will be the differing factor. Since all my books were done for print, and I wasn't thinking of digitally publishing them, now I have to go back and re-edit for the digital format. So that's the biggest different between writing for the two. Formatting.
